At the big game in Miami last Sunday, Jay-Z, Beyonce and their eldest daughter Blue Ivy, eight, were seen sitting down as Demi Lovato sang the national anthem.

Although their decision was widely seen as an act of protest, Jay-Z insisted during his lecture Tuesday that ‘It actually wasn’t, sorry,’ TMZ reports.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation is in charge of the entertainment portion of the Super Bowl, including halftime. Beyonce played the event in 2013 and 2016, before her husband’s company was involved in the extravaganza.

‘What happened was, it was not premeditated at all,’ said Jay-Z, explaining that he and Beyonce were ‘in artist mode’ analyzing the performances.

Yolanda Adams sang the 19th century patriotic song America The Beautiful before Demi took the field to sing The Star Spangled Banner.

According to Jay-Z, Beyonce ‘says to me: “I know this feeling, right here.” Like, she’s super nervous, ’cause she’s performed at the Super Bowl before. I haven’t.’

During the musical numbers, Jay-Z was ‘really just looking at the show. So, I’m looking at the show – did the mics start? Was it too low to start?’

He also clarified that ‘we couldn’t stage that. Blue was right next to us. We wouldn’t do that to Blue and put her in that position.’

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira gave an electrifying double-act performance at half-time, with both paying tribute to their backgrounds.

Shakira incorporated chambeta, a dance from her region of Colombia, as well as Arab elements like belly dance and zaghrouta in a nod to her Lebanese roots.

Meanwhile, Jennifer’s performance included children in cages and a cape with the Stars And Stripes on one side and the Puerto Rican flag on the other.

Jay-Z argued that it was unnecessary for him and Beyonce to engage in a ‘silent protest’ considering ‘the biggest loudest protest of all’ was halftime.

In a recent New York Times interview he defended himself from allegations that by partnering with the NFL he has betrayed the football players like Colin Kaepernick who knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality.

He feels his partnership will better equip him to share his political outlook with the NFL audience and added: ‘As long as real people are being hurt and marginalized and losing family members, then yes, I can take a couple rounds of negative press.’
