John Cena Comments On Whether He Has A 17th World Title Reign In Him

Will The Franchise Player ever surpass the record he shares with Ric Flair?

Like him or not, John Cena has solidified his place in wrestling history as one of the greatest of all time. His full-time run ran for a decade and a half, during which time he won 16 World Championships in WWE. That means Cena is currently tied for the most World Title wins in wrestling history with Ric Flair, and he recently addressed whether there’s a possibility he will ever break the record.

A 17th Reign

“I’m not done in the ring, but I’m not certain that that’s on the cards,” Cena said when asked about a 17th reign during his appearance at Comic-Con Wales (H/T WrestlingNews.co). “I’m 45, and I can tell you from being a 16-time champion, it is very tough to win. The top of that mountain is a young man’s game.”

Cena’s last World Title win, the one that tied him for the record, came all the way back in 2017 and lasted just two weeks. A sign to some that the only reason Cena even won the title was to put him one step away from breaking the record, and that a 17th reign would be imminent. More than five years later, that hasn’t happened, and with Cena appearing in the ring less and less, the ship on doing that may have now sailed.

Will He Be At Clash At The Castle?

As for when Cena will appear in a WWE ring next, and who his opponent might be, since the Comic-Con he spoke at above was in Wales, Clash at the Castle and his availability was naturally discussed. The bad news for those hoping Cena might make a surprise appearance at the UK show is that won’t be happening. The Franchise Player might have been in Wales this month, but he won’t be returning for the stadium show in a few weeks.

Cena’s connection to WWE will never be gone for good, much like The Rock’s. However, also like Rock, Cena continues to land more and more Hollywood roles that will quickly result in him having less time to wrestle. It was believed Cena would wrestle Theory at SummerSlam this year, but the veteran didn’t end up appearing on the show at all.
