Angle is working as an advisor on the project that starts filming next year.
It seems we may well be on the cusp of a wrestling biopic boom. Even though the Vince McMahon project, in which Bradley Cooper was rumored to be playing the WWE chairman, seems to have been shelved, The Iron Claw hits cinemas next month and received a lot of praise following its premiere. The film details the highs and unbelievable lows of the Von Erichs. As for that boom, Kurt Angle has got a movie of his own in the works.
A Kurt Angle Movie
The Olympic gold medalist revealed during an appearance on True Geordie that he’s an advisor on a movie about his life story. “I got a movie we’re doing about my life story, which we’re gonna start filming probably next year,” Angle revealed (H/T to Fightful for the transcription). “It should be a pretty cool thing. I’ll be able to help out with it, be an advisor, which is kind of cool. So I’m looking forward to that.”
Angle has definitely had a life that will likely translate well when turned into a movie. Kicking things off with winning gold for the US at the 1996 Olympics, Angle made the move into pro wrestling and enjoyed one of the most successful careers in WWE and TNA history.
Taking to the business faster than anyone before or since, I’m assuming the film will also focus heavily on Angle’s battles with addiction, something he has been very open about during interviews and on his podcast.
Who Will Play Kurt?
Now speculation on who will play Angle, and any other wrestlers who might appear in the movie, can begin. Angle actually has quite a few acting credits of his own, a prominent role in Tom Hardy’s Warrior among them.
While I’m sure he’ll make a cameo in the movie, Angle doesn’t appear to be keen on playing himself. If Chad Gable has any interest in sidestepping into Hollywood at some point, he would absolutely be my pick, at least for the parts of the film that recreate Angle’s in-ring moments.
There are a lot of incredibly interesting stories that can be dramatized and retold on the big screen in the wrestling business, and I truly hope The Iron Claw kickstarts a trend when it hits cinemas next month. Non-wrestling fans really aren’t prepared for the story that film will tell. Angle’s life story isn’t quite as dark as that, but there will undoubtedly be some heartwrenching moments in a movie retelling the events of his life
