Navigating Towards a Sustainable Yachting Future: Innovative Solutions Ahead

Following recent coverage of Kongsberg Maritime’s current products and systems for sustainable yachting, the company’s ongoing investment in research and development focuses on a number of innovations that could be advantageous for future superyachts. According to Oskar Levander, senior vice president of Business Concepts at Kongsberg Maritime, there are two major emerging technology trends in the maritime industry: digitalisation and environmental concerns.

Levander explains, “In terms of digitalization, the key is to connect the vessel in an entirely new way and enable new ways of operating, managing, and designing it.” “The situational awareness technology that we’re developing, for instance, presents us with intriguing opportunities. By integrating cameras, radars, sonars, and lidar that can detect what is around the vessel, the system could create a more realistic 3D environment for the commander to experience what is occurring.

In addition to being advantageous for the yacht’s navigation, a situational awareness system would allow owners and guests to experience the yacht in an entirely new manner by allowing them to see below the water’s surface. If the technology becomes sufficiently reliable, Levander believes it has the potential to obviate the need for a bridge in the traditional location, thereby creating intriguing yacht design possibilities.

The environment is the second trend for prospective innovations at Kongsberg Maritime. According to Levander, one of the greatest challenges we face today is reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. “Many yacht owners are very keen to be able to minimise their carbon footprint and, for them, there are a range of different technologies out there that could improve efficiency or even enable zero emissions.”

Reina Boats: Pioneering the ‘Houseyacht’ Revolution in the Marine Industry

The next major trend in the marine industry might just be “Houseyachts,” according to Reina Boats, a new U.S.-based company set to launch a line of vessels that can function as both yachts and luxury homes this fall.
Reina’s founders, Hayri Dayi and Emin Günal, came up with this innovative concept in response to the surge in interest in boating during the COVID-19 pandemic. They observed a growing demand for stylish vessels that could offer ample space and amenities without exorbitant costs.
Günal explained, “Many boats do not have the living space to provide all the accommodations and comforts people want. Power catamarans offer more volume but also have become quite expensive. That left houseboats as the only option.”
However, Reina did not settle for replicating the “outdated” floating homes of the past. Instead, they embarked on designing sleek, modern vessels that would appeal to a new generation of discerning yachters.
The Reina houseboat lineup comprises five models, ranging from a functional “floating RV” to an extravagant two-story overwater condo. These vessels vary in size from 26 to 60 feet and boast upscale interior decor, high-quality furniture, top-tier appliances, and smart-home technology.
What sets Reina’s houseboats apart is their versatility. These vessels are not confined to lakes and canals; they meet U.S. Coast Guard standards and are suitable for open-sea navigation. Constructed from marine-grade aluminum, they feature a hull design similar to catamarans, ensuring stability. Each houseboat is powered by the latest generation of Mercury outboard engines known for their fuel efficiency, quiet operation, and smooth performance. Moreover, they are certified with an Ultra Low Emissions rating from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
To further reduce emissions, seafarers can opt for batteries as an alternative power source instead of a traditional generator.
Reina’s houseboats will be manufactured in Turkey, a renowned yachting hub. The first model, the Reina Live 44DR, is set to make its debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October. With this innovative approach, Reina hopes to spearhead the emerging trend of Houseyachts in the marine industry.

Feadship’s Obsidian Sets New Standards for Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impact in Superyachts

Feadship has achieved a remarkable feat with its latest addition to its fleet, the 276-foot yacht named Obsidian. Not only is Obsidian more energy-efficient, but it also boasts lower environmental impact compared to Feadship’s pioneering hybrid yacht, Savannah, which was launched in 2015. What’s even more impressive is that the entire design process for Obsidian was carried out during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Feadship collaborated with De Voogt Naval Architects to develop the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), a tool that can assess a yacht’s carbon profile and environmental impact based on all its components and operations, including emissions and the long-term effects of construction materials. Additionally, Feadship worked with 20 major industry partners to create a tool for predicting the environmental impact of a standardized operational year in the yacht’s lifecycle.

Obsidian’s results are quite remarkable. It is estimated that if Obsidian runs on fossil fuel, it will operate with 27 percent less total environmental impact than a yacht of similar size launched just five years ago. If powered by a non-fossil diesel fuel called HVO, it could achieve a staggering 60 percent reduction in environmental impact. During sea trials, Obsidian ran on HVO and emitted 90 percent less carbon than a traditional gas-powered vessel, exceeding initial calculations of its efficiency.

Beyond innovative biofuels, Obsidian features a low and sleek hull optimized for cruising, reduced fighting weight, and improved overall balance. The yacht is equipped with a streamlined diesel-electric propulsion system and boasts 4.5 times more electrical storage capacity than its predecessor. These advancements contribute to Obsidian’s outstanding energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Experience the Yacht-Like Elegance of This Water-Floating Home

The designer from Poland, Wojciech Morszty, has a concept for a half-yacht, half-actual residential space that would extend coastlines and address the problem of rising sea levels. “Solve” is a bit of an exaggeration, but a suitable living space would undoubtedly address the issue.

Ocean Community is a concept consisting of mobile pods-houses that would float about 800 metres off the coast.

They are mobile but are not vessels because they are intended as permanent residences. Morszty does not specify what would propel them, but he envisions a future in which they could be used to convey their inhabitants back to land if they so desire, and dock at a stationary centre for life on water.

These shells will effectively aid in the formation of aquatic colonies. They will be completely autonomous and quite luxurious, judging by the images in the gallery. They will be luxurious, but not precisely designed for family life (imagine a child running around in that immaculate, sparse, futuristic living space!).

In addition to being self-sufficient, the floating residences would utilise renewable energy sources such as water, sun, and wind. This would enable for a completely self-sufficient, off-grid lifestyle at sea. For everything else, residents could float back to land to ensure they obtained it.

“The creation of these new structures will serve as fully functional living spaces connected to existing land infrastructure, allowing new ocean communities to become a natural extension of coastal cities,” explains Morszty regarding the concept.

The Ultimate 213-Foot Expedition Yacht: Packed with Cutting-Edge Tech, It’s Like a Bond Car on Water!

The most recent expedition yacht design by Gill Schmid Design was created specifically for James Bond fans.

Christened Synesthesia, the 213-foot newcomer is sturdy enough that it can undertake all manner of missions on the high seas but also doesn’t skimp on lavish amenities.

The New York-based studio said in a statement, “We are looking for an owner who enjoys the James Bond lifestyle, always seeking adventures at the highest level of comfort and luxury.”

The Synesthesia’s durable steel hull is surmounted by a lightweight carbon-fiber monocoque superstructure with sufficient structural integrity to create a vast interior devoid of columns. The ship is packed with architectural features that will also appeal to gadget-obsessed M16 agents. To begin with, the interior glazing is entirely retractable, with sliding doors and rotating glass elements that create an open-plan configuration and connect the interior to the exterior.

The yacht is also fitted with a number of hidden terraces and platforms. The touch-and-go helipad can be lifted up to create a spectacular party space, for example. A helicopter is not the only item that can be stored onboard. The tender storage facility can accommodate a 33-foot limousine tender, a 33-foot RIB, and four Jet Skis. On the main deck, there is also a drone store for tech-savvy agents.

The living quarters are centred on a bright and expansive main salon and dining area designed for entertaining. On the bridge deck there is also an outdoor dining area with a glass floor that overlooks the infinity pool and pool terrace below. It is the ideal location to savour a few Vesper Martinis, shaken, not stirred. You can unwind in a luxurious full-beam owner’s suite, while your fellow agents retreat to one of six capacious guest cabins. The yacht can accommodate up to 17 crew members (or thugs).

The veranda is an additional location ideal for Vespers. The breezy, open-air sanctuary features a large alfresco dining area, loungers, and a Jacuzzi with an infinity edge. The only thing lacking is a femme fatale.
