The Finnish authorities will allow the US to use several Finnish garrisons or military bases.
Yle’s sources said that these are land, sea, and air zones.
It is noted that the negotiations on the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Finland and the United States are almost over.
The parties agreed that American troops would be able to operate in Finland.
However, the agreement does not provide for the establishment of a US base in Finland. US Army soldiers will be able to stay there temporarily. The text of the agreement is currently confidential.
A previous agreement was reached several years ago, but negotiations began after Russia attacked Ukraine, the publication emphasizes.
Thus, Finland hopes that cooperation with the United States will improve the country’s security.
The United States has similar agreements with 20 countries. Negotiations are currently underway with Sweden.
Finland officially became a NATO member on April 4. This country became the 31st member of the Alliance.
Finland discussed NATO and its membership in the Alliance in depth as early as 2021, and since then, the country’s leadership and NATO have spoken on the phone or met almost 10 times.
And it was the invasion of Ukraine last year that led Finland and Sweden to apply for NATO membership.
As previously reported, Finland is preparing a new aid package for Ukraine aimed at protecting critical infrastructure in the fall and winter.
