Rheinmetall has received an order from the German government to supply Ukraine with around 100,000 rounds of 120mm mortar ammunition.

The company’s press service announced this.

The German government has signed a contract for the production of 120mm mortar ammunition rounds with the German defense concern Rheinmetall. The deal is part of a €400 million military aid package for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The order, worth a figure in the lower-three-digit million-euro range, provides for the supply of about 100,000 rounds of 120mm mortar ammunition.

Delivery is due to begin shortly and extend over the next two years. The average volume of deliveries can, therefore, be just over 4,000 rounds per month.

The exact scope of the ordered ammunition is currently unknown. Rheinmetall and its subsidiaries produce a complete array of ammunition of this caliber, including HE-Frag mortar rounds and smoke and incendiary mortar rounds.

In its announcement, the manufacturer noted that through the acquisition of the Spanish ammunition manufacturer Expal, Rheinmetall has significantly strengthened its capacity in this area.

Support for Ukraine

In October, Rheinmetall and the German government also signed two contracts to supply 155 mm artillery ammunition to Ukraine.

As part of the first order, the company will manufacture and supply about 100,000 155-mm artillery shells produced by the Spanish company Rheinmetall Expal Munitions.

Another agreement provides for the transfer to Ukraine of tens of thousands of L15 rounds.

The fulfillment of both orders starts in 2023, with the delivery of several tens of thousands of shells, and the remaining quantity will be delivered in 2024.

At the end of October, the German defense concern Rheinmetall and Ukroboronprom formed a joint venture to repair Western equipment.
